Orthodontic FAQ

Q: Could you explain orthodontic records and why are they necessary?
A:
These are records complied the orthodontist to help with diagnosis and treatment. They include; X-Rays and tooth models. These records are vital for treatment because they provide information that may not be immediately evident, for example, abnormal growth patterns, jaw symmetry, tooth roots and other issues.

Q:  Why do Orthodontists insist on “early treatment” for some children?
A:
In some instances it is necessary to take preventative or interceptive measures in order to guide the proper development of the jaws and teeth. Early treatment prevents tooth irregularities and disproportionate jaw relationships later on in life.

Q: What impact does orthodontic treatment have on someone’s psychology?
A:
It is a well known fact that crooked teeth often lead to social phobia and low self esteem. With corrective treatment this can be avoided. Children who have these issues corrected before they are ten years old will ensure that they are not teased in school. For adults, it improves social behavior which ultimately leads to a higher quality of life.

Q: Why does orthodontics place great emphasis on the adolescent growth phase?
A: The adolescent phase represents the period when much of the facial growth occurs. When treated during this time, there is a good chance that the facial profile of the growing adolescent will be influenced favorably. After adolescence, surgery may be required to rectify a jaw problem which is costly and the treatment process takes a much longer time.

Q: Am I too old to get braces for adults?
A: Absolutely not! Provided you have healthy supporting structures, you are never too old for braces. Many adults are taking advantage of orthodontics to correct misaligned teeth. You can get your smile back irrespective of your age.

Q: Why is early tooth extraction sometimes necessary?
A:
Early extraction of selected teeth may be required to guide the eruption of permanent teeth or to create space for un-erupted teeth. Timing tooth removals carefully can prevent a number of problems such as:

  • Improperly positioned teeth
  • Root damage to permanent teeth
  • Overcrowding

Q: How long does Orthodontic treatment take?
A:
Generally speaking, the average duration of treatment can range anywhere from one to three years, the actual duration depends upon the severity of the condition, the age of the patient and the cooperation of the patient.

Q: How can braces improve self-image?
A: Research has consistently demonstrated that the face and mouth are the central points of all human interaction. The way you look has been shown to influence your popularity, personality, social interaction and your self image. A better facial appearance has the potential to improve the quality of all these in many aspects.
